It's the type of story that forces the viewer to question his/her every reaction, because that which makes him laugh may make another man cringe, while that which thoroughly disgusts him on the surface may elicit inexplicable and uncontrollable internal delight. It is a dialogue- and character-driven story that examines one particular slice of life, and the atmosphere, the personalities, the philosophies, and the means of communication that flow through it. And although this environment is meant to appear familiar and generic to a certain extent - such that the viewer will relate to the characters, situations, and issues - it somehow manages to remain foreign and unique, primarily because certain aspects have been exaggerated for comedic or some other thematic effect. The concept, purpose, and impact of time is an important element in this story, the entirety of which occurs over the course of one day, during which several characters bob and weave though each others' lives to create an interconnected patchwork of synchronicities. The banality of life represents another important motif throughout the story, though there exists underlying symbolism that, when examined and comprehended, heightens the significance of the seemingly irrelevant conversations or actions of the primary characters, who are described below: The consummate pessimist, Lou Weaver struggles with multiple conflicting emotions, especially now that his absentee father has suddenly reappeared in his life. Lou's intelligence and desire to evolve keep him from drowning in what he considers a cesspool of a society, and situates him as the unspoken leader of his group of contemporaries. Brooksy Sterling is the closest thing Lou has to a best friend, although they do not appear to have much more in common than polished analytical skills and an inability to interact harmoniously with women. Richie Wexler thinks he's a lot more intelligent, charismatic, and attractive than evidence would suggest. Chalk it up to a touch of arrogance and plenty of cocaine abuse. Mickey McQueeney - in search of a gun and out to settle a score - can be most accurately described as an unintelligent thug. Unfortunately for him, that's still an overstatement. Cooter Haynes wants nothing more than to smoke weed and watch television - not what you'd call lofty aspirations for a borderline genius. Troy Vank - forever the clown - seems doomed from the very start, though he may just have the last laugh after all..And then there's Bobby, the ultimate anomaly within the anomaly.. Above all, Mutual Admiration Society is a story that deals with the arcane nature of human intellect and emotion, not in an effort to explain it, but to instead explore the damage that it's capable of. There is a theory based in quantum physics that suggests half of what we think we see does not actually exist, but is based only upon preconceived notions of what we feel we are supposed to be observing. By expanding our minds and examining beyond the superficial simplicity, we shall uncover another layer of reality. Mutual Admiration Society presents the viewer with such a challenge, while remaining ambiguous enough to allow for myriad layers of reality to be revealed.
